PLAYGROUND IN THE TROPICS

Pahang, with a land area of 35,960 square kilometers is the largest state in Peninsula Malaysia. Nestled in the centre of the Peninsula, Pahang boasts some 210 kilometers of splendid South China Sea coastline on its eastern flank and mountainous-forested
interior.

Ancient Tropical Rain Forests estimated to be some 130 million years old dominate its hinterlands and the best place to discover its magic is none other than the Taman Negara or the National Park. Five of Malaysia's major hill resorts are located in the state, namely Cameron Highlands, Genting Highlands, Fraser's Hill, Bukit Tinggi and Janda Baik. So to is the highest peak in Peninsula Malaysia, Gunung Tahan which stands at 2,187 meter above the sea level.

Pahang  has a population of about 1.5 million. The majority are Malays, followed by the Chinese, indians and the Indegenous Peoples. These diverse groups provide a calorful background to the cultural mix and harmony that could be easily in their daily life.

Pahang offers you an adventure of diffeerent indeed, it has a couple of international holiday resort that sit pretty on the hills enveloped by the world's oldest Tropical Tain Forest. The more adventurous would surely be spoilt for choice with activities ranging from bird watching to white rafting and four-wheel drive adventure to big game fishing. Even the picturesque fishing villages dotting its coastline would invite the photographer in you to search for that perfect postcard pictures.

TIOMAN ISLAND lies about 36 nautical miles off the coast of Peninsular Malaysia, spans over 38 kilometres long and 19 kilometres wide it was once reputed to be one of most beautiful tropical islands in the region, So much so that Tioman made it's mark when Hollywood portayed it in the 1958 box office movie, 'South Pacific.'

ISLAND HOPPING - Hire a boat and cruise around the islands of Seri Buat Achipelago of which Tioman is the largest one. The boats will bring you to the various islands and once you sail out of the gazetted radius cast in a line and spend hours of fun fishing in the sea. You can rent thenecessary fishing gear fromthe boatmen.

A BEACH HIDEOUT - Juara beach is the only bay that faces open South China Sea. Its secluded location makes ideal for honeymooners or those simply seeking for the perfect quiet hideout. Juara beach is also the entry point for the cross-island-juara trail and the start off point to climb Mount Kajang.

GUNUNG KAJANG - Mount Kajang is the highest island peak off Peninsular Malaysia. There are two trails heading up, one from Kampung Paya and the other from Kampung Juara, neither one should be attempted without a guide as the trek is pretty challenging and athoughtful preparation of physical fitness. The trek from Kampung Paya can be completed in one day, given if you start early in the morning.

A PERFECT QUIET HOLIDAY IN CHERATING - Cherating is located about 45 kilometers north of Kuantan, nestling on the Terengganu-Pahang border and fronting the South China Sea. Here, wide gently sloping sandy beaches extend as far as the eyes can see and it is a perfect places for a quiet holiday. Cherating was discovered in the 1960's, by backpackers who stayed at guesthouses and wooden huts among the coconut groves by the sea. Today, there are world-class hotel and chalets, including the world renowned Club Mediterranean.

WHITE SANDY BEACHES OF CHERATING - Visitors can begin their vacation by strolling along the white sandy beach. A walk on the beach will offer opportunity to collect beautiful seashells and accasionally you may find tiny crabs sruggling to find their way out of the sea. Spend your much-earned vacation just lying on the beach. The golden white sand edging clear blue waters will entice sun lovers to just laze around and enjoy the warmth of the tropical sun or dip in the invitingly cool, clear water that wash the shore of Cherating. For thrill seekers, challenge the wind that rides the waves by going windsurfing and surfing. You can also try snorkeling to view the beautiful underwater corals and sea life.

TELUK CHEMPEDAK - Only 5km from the city centre Teluk Chempedak is the favourite quick weekend escape for Kuantan folks. Swim about, build a sand castle or stroll along the beach as you heart the sounds of waves hitting on the sandy beach, Teluk Chempedak hosts a 5 star resort hotel catered for those who seek comfort in their weekend escape.

THE GREAT MINES OF SUNGAI LEMBING
Explore the world's deepest and longest underground tin mining tunnel. Restored to its original state back when Sungai Lembing was dubbed the 'El-Derado of the East'. the Great Mines of Sungai Lembing take visitors back to the glorious tin-mining era of Sungai Lembing. This educative yet adventurous tour take you through the many processes involved in tin mining with dioramas, paraphernalia and interactive exhibits. Also learn about the tin mining industry's contribution to the nation's growth and development in the post.

PANORAMA HILL SUNGAI LEMBING - Today, the main attraction of Sungai Lembing is Panorama Hill, true to it's name it is spot to watch sunrise in the early morning. For the health folks do drop by Sugai Jin and dip into the hot springs there. Once could later make a short detour to Air Terjun Pelangi (Rainbow Falls) for a quick swim.

THE FISHING VILLAGE, BESERAH - Centre of the 'keropok' (fish crackers) and 'ikan masin' (salted fish ) cottage industry a trip to Kuantan is not complete without a stopover at Beserah a place where one must try the local seafood produce. However, do head on the Tanjung Lumpur food centre for a more complete sampling of the local fare. A few kilometres off Kuantan bridged this sea facing food destination hosts an arry of 'warung' (hawkers) that offers a multitude choice of seafood dishes mostly prpared in the Thai-Pahang fusion cuisine. Don't expect a Michelin start treatment but one might be lucky enough to taste a Michelin grade dish between the smoky hawkers of Tanjung Lumpur.

PANTAI SEPAT - To have an opposite experience of Teluk Chempedak head to Sepat Beach for a quite stroll overlooking South China Sea. 10km off Kuantan and also an alternative route to the royal town of Pekan.

PEKAN THE ROYAL TOWN - Pahang State Museum, with a complex of 5 inter-linked museum and galleries, has undergone and achieved since 2007 as something not only an innovative transformation but also an outstanding development, which is worthy of special focus. The Pahng State Museum began with a bold attempt at re-conceptualization, under the term 'The Intelektual Garden' synonymous to the German word, freiraum, meaning wide spaces fot open-mindedness, ideas, imagination and creativity leading to optimism, visions, the spreading and sharing of knowledge. It also means that the new concept adopted by the museum emphasized a lot clearer the three-era trajectory of Pahang's historical and socio-political development: pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial. More importantly, this framework also guided the museum's contruction of comprehensive set-up with an emphasis on identity, religion and glocal issues, making it unique and contemporary.

LAKE CHINI THE GREAT LAKES - Tasik Chini (Lake Chini) is the second largest fresh water lake in Malaysia covering over 12,565 acres of land and is made up of a series of 12 lakes. Declared with a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status it is the home to over 138 species of plants it is inhabited by a dragon called Naga Seri Gumum while others claim that an ancient sunken Khmer city is at the bottom of the lake.

TANJUNG LUMPUR MEDAN IKAN BAKAR
Situated near the mouth o9f the Kuantan River, Tanjung Lumpur is a traditional fishing village and a renowned destination for the scrumptious ikan bakar (grilled fish). It was one of the earliest Malay Villages in Pahang, separated from the state's capital city by the Kuantan River. Visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining in this town as numerous seafood eateries can be found at almost every corner.

TAMAN GELORA
Peaceful and serene, Taman Gelora with its scenic lotus pond and shady casuarina trees is a popular recreaational spot among the townsfolk. Often regarded as Kuantan's best-kept secret, the park is mostly frequented by locals and not as widely publicised, yet still retains its own allure as the perfect place to relax and unwind Exercising facilities can be found dotted around the park, as well as a reflexology path and platform for Tai Chi. If you get tired of the park, escape to the nearby beach for a some privacy and solitude with its gentle waves and refreshing ocean breeze.

IN THE WILDERNESS - The seaside town of Kuala Rompin, the largest in the district, serves as the gateway to both the Endau-Rompin State Park as well as the Island of Tioman. Kuala Rompin is renowned for its giant freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium rosenberghii), also known as "Udang Galah". They are caught fresh from Rompin River, Nennasi River, Anak Endau River and Endau River.

INTERNATIONAL
CHALLENGE -  September sees the annual Royal Pahang Billfish International Challenge taking place off Tioman. For all the past years, it has been held in the seas off the town of Kuala Rompin in Pahang, about 124 km south of Kuantan.

The Royal Pahang Billfish International Challenge actually takes advantages of the active migration season of billfish like the marlin and salfish. This regularly swim past the rompin area from the northern hemisphere. The competition is only for catches of sailfish and marlin, and contestants are guide by the rules of conduct based on international standards set by the Billfish Foundation and The International Game Fish Association. 'Catch and Release' is the name of the game.

LATA JARUM - Lata Jarum is a magnificent two-tiered waterfall resulting from a series of rapids culminating in a cool rock pool. A cool and refreshing picnic and recreation spot, it is located within the lata Jarum Nature Park. Don't miss a chance to spot the Raffleasia in the forest, as well as several unique flora and fauna species populating the area.


ENDAU-ROMPIN STATE PARK - This ancient rainforest is the second largest national park in Peninsular Malaysia and one of the country's last remaining lowland forest. Its untouched wilderness offers a myriad of eco attractions including a diversity of flora and fauna, majestic rock formations, captiviting waterfalls and flowing rivers.


NATIONAL ELEPHANT CONSERVATION CENTRE - Eastablished 1989, the centre is dedicated towards the rescue and rehabilitation of elephants. Its also aims to educate the public on the importance of elephant conservation and protection. The only one of its kind in the country, this centre offers the rare opportunity to get up close and personl with these gentle beasts.


CAMERON HIGHLANDS - Located 1,524m above sea level, this refreshing retreat is Malaysia's largest hill resort. Characterised by undulating valleys, sprawling tea plantations, terraced flower gardens, vegetable farms and strawberry parks, Cameron Highlands is made up of three main townships : Ringlet, Tanah Rata and Brinchang.


GUNUNG SENYUM - Situated at 1,549m above sea level, the Gunung Senyum Recreational Park is a significant archaeological site. Part of the Jengka Forest Reserve, this mountain is estimated to be approximately 3,000 years old. The park has around 19 caves, including Gua Terang Bulan, Gua Hidang, Gua Angin and Gua Gajah.


KOTA GELANGGI CAVES - Reputedly 150 million years old, Kota Gelanggi Caves feature magnificent natural formations and unique cave fauna. According to legend, the cave are actually the ruins of an ancient city. Gua Terang Bulan and Gua Sanding are among the most popular ones here. There's also a Mini Museum with comprehensive information and displays.


SUNGAI LEMBING MUSEUM - The Sungai Lembing Museum takes visitors back to Sungai Lembing's glorious past as the largest producer of tin-ore in Pahang, earning in the nickname 'El Dorado' of the Malay States. Among the collection of mining equipment, workers' attire and antique furniture is the diorama, reputed to be among the best iin the country.


ESPLANADE  PARK - Esplanade Park's namesake is a kilometer long paved walkway along the Kuantan River, neighboring the estuary to the South China Sea. Sitting at the park, you may let your mind wanders as you watch riverboats pass by, inhale the fragrance of the sea let it's gentle breeze cool you down. whether in the day-time or at night, you can see fishers lining the river banks with the fishiing rods in hand. It's pleasant and relaxing place to go for a long walk or spend time with family in the park's playground surrounded by lush palm trees and decorative lamp-post lining the walkway.

TAMAN NEGARA - Malaysia's premier national park is a haven for a diverse collection of flora and fauna. One of the oldest rainforests in the world, Taman Negara is estimated to be over 130 million years old. Ancient trees with giant buttresses, limestone, waterfalls and jungle-clad mountains are just some of the unique attractions in this 434,350ha park.

Situated approximately 56km off the coast of Pahang, Pulau Tioman is hailed as one of Southeast Asia's finest beach getaways. This tropical island beckons with aquamarine waters, spectacular coral formations, diverse marine life and a rustic charm. The island's Gunung Nenek Semukut is Malaysia's highest freestanding spire at 690m.

The hill resort exudes the nostalgic charm of a bygon era. A birdwatcher's paradise, Fraser's Hill is ideal for visitors who are interested in gentler pursuiits and quite, laid-back retreat.
